How To Make Your First Massage Experience More Comfortable

Blog

There are so many benefits associated with massage. It can help you relax, get better sleep, ease muscle aches, and even improve athletic performance. If this will be your first time getting a massage, however, you might feel a little apprehensive. The idea of having someone else touching you can be a little odd at first. Luckily, there are several ways to make your first massage experience more comfortable so that you're able to enjoy the benefits of massage more fully.

Talk to the massage therapist in person beforehand.

These days, booking appointments at a massage clinic online is so easy, but it is also a bit impersonal. See if you can call and have a quick chat with your massage therapist before your session. This will give you a chance to ask them any questions you might have about their process or services. Plus, it will help them feel more familiar with you to meet them in person, which can make it easier to relax during your massage.

Don't feel pressured to strip naked.

When you get undressed for your massage session, your midsection will be covered with a towel for privacy. However, if you feel odd about being fully nude under the towel, you can leave some of your clothing items on. You don't have to remove your bra or underwear, for instance. Your massage therapist will do their best to work around these clothing items and respect your privacy.

Book a shorter session.

For your first massage, you might want to book a shorter session of 30 minutes, rather than a full hour or 90 minutes. This way, you will know that the experience won't last too long, which can make it less intimidating. If you are enjoying yourself, you can usually ask your therapist to extend the session. In many cases, you will feel far more comfortable than you expected and will end up extending, but it's nice to know this is an option.

Speak up.

Know that you can speak to your massage therapist during your session. You don't have to stay silent! If something feels uncomfortable, you can let them know.

Getting a massage can be so beneficial. Do not let your feelings of awkwardness get in the way. If you follow the tips above, you can enjoy your first massage to the fullest. If you have any lingering concerns, bring them up to your massage therapist.
